Along with regular academic activities many other extra-curriculum activities are organized by the College in association with the University at various levels like NCC,NSS, senior citizen education and many more. Among these, our college commenced the NCC (National Cadet Corps) from the academic session 1984-85.The motive of government or university behind starting such extra-curricular activities is to motivate the students in their respective fields of likings and ultimately serve the nation in better way.
When the NCC first began in 1984-85 in college it was estimated/ordered that only 52 cadets would participate. This troop is associated with 4MH/BN/NCC/Nagpur and operates according to the instructions and command lines given by this head office. Since academic year 2004-05, 5 female students were allowed to be the part of this troop. And hence is the reason that girls are no more behind in any field of service and this new rule is a platform for them to do so. According to an amendment in year 2007-08 33% of the intake was reserved for female candidates and accordingly in NCC out of 52 cadets 35 are male candidates and others are female candidates.
Many other Institutes and Colleges in Maharashtra are in the course of establishing National Cadet Corps for which the institute requires to fulfill the criteria of certain count of students, grand playground, a separate office to maintain logistics for NCC amenities. Only if an institute is capable of fulfilling all such requirements, it is granted the permission to start NCC. As a part of this before granting the permission, the officers and members of group and battalion visit the college and inspect all the important things.
For the NCC to operate smoothly, a permanent staff is appointed to handle the responsibilities explaining all the information and giving the required training. The training center for male staff is located at Officer Training Academy, Kamptee and for female staff the training center is at Officer Training Academy, Gwalior. The first three months training is PRCN training. On successful completion of this training lieutenant title is awarded which consists of single on shoulders. After this in within coming seven years the training of one month and on its successful completion ‘Caption’ rank is granted and felicitated with 3 stars on shoulders. After this the next one month training within coming seven years would award the staff with highest designation at college level which is ‘Major’ rank. In this way various levels of training and exposures is provided which becomes a valuable experience for the staff till the age of 55 years. After this the staff retires from the position.
For college students the training of NCC in senior division is expanded over 3 years of duration. To participate in this group the desiring candidate has to undergo various field activities test and physical fitness test. Every two days of week for two hours per day, the candidates are trained on different subjects related to NCC like Map Reading, Arms and Amenities. In the second year the NCC B-Cert examination is held based on these subjects. To appear in this exam 75% of attendance is mandatory in the regular sessions and minimum 2 camps of 10 days with commendable character. The cadets who passed B-Cert and C-cert exam are eligible to apply for service in Indian Army, Maharashtra Home guard and many other government departments. In this way a cadet can fulfill his dream of serving the nation as well as meet the needs of his family and society. In the academic year 2016-17, 7 students were selected in Indian Army, currently undergoing training in Belgaum Karnataka, one student in Bhopal and one female cadet in Maharashtra Police Nagpur. After completing their trainings they will permanently serve in their respective departments.
On behalf of NCC, many social events are organized such as Cleanliness drive, Tree plantation, and Blood donation camp, Counseling on topics like women education, yoga day, polio drop camp and many more. The cadets who volunteer in such events are also eligible to obtain incentive marks which helps in increasing their academic reports and also a great exposure to social activities. The cadets of National Cadet Corps are granted the uniform, boots and other accessories from NCC unit. Each cadet receives the amount of Rs. 5 per class accordingly for 3 classes per day they receive Rs 15. Depending on their attendance they are given yearly washing allowance.
